Good Friday

Most people have heard of Good Friday and you probably know it’s celebrated on the Friday before Easter Sunday.  But do you know what it’s all about?

The events commemorated on this day don’t seem to be good at all.  Jesus was whipped, nailed to the cross and left to hang there until He was dead! So why do we call it ‘Good’ Friday?  Well it’s because of what Jesus achieved by His horrific death.  We all want to get to heaven but none of us deserve it.  Everyone does things wrong sometimes, so if God judges us, He’s bound to find us guilty of all sorts of things.  If we try to earn our way into heaven we’re going to fail because we’re only human.

That’s where Jesus comes in.  He lived a perfect life on earth and didn’t deserve any punishment. On that first Good Friday He took on the guilt and sins of the world.  He took the punishment in our place.  Now anyone who believes in Jesus and admits that they’ve done wrong can be forgiven. That’s the key point about being a Christian.  Believing in Jesus and confessing your sin.

So now you know why it’s called ‘Good’ Friday.  That was the day that someone else took the punishment for everything we’ve ever done wrong.  For further information on being a Christian, contact us or try some of the websites mentioned on our links page.
